This trip proved to be a highly rewarding experience full of celebration and camaraderie as TEAM SG participated in the 2023 Longest Day Golf Challenge Finals in Boavista, Portugal.
Alongside the three other teams, an impressive sum exceeding £50,000 was raised for Macmillan. Remarkably, the overall proceeds from this year’s Longest Day event surpassed the one-million-pound mark.
Despite the unexpected overcast conditions in Portugal during the practice round, our team performed admirably, showcasing exceptional synergy. Notable achievements included an impressive 9 points on a challenging par three that required a precise shot over a ravine, covering approximately 170 yards to reach the green.
Post-day one, the team’s spirits were high and a memorable evening ensued, featuring a delightful dinner of piri piri chicken and generously portioned red velvet cake at a local restaurant.
On the second day, misty weather conditions briefly delayed the start of round two, however the sun burnt off the mist and the skies promised the weather that the team had been expecting in Portugal. During the round the team faced challenges in stringing together consistently strong holes but demonstrated perseverance, finishing the round with a commendable charge on the last four holes.
Despite a well-deserved moment of relaxation on the terrace, the realisation that the team had narrowly fallen short by just one point cast a sombre mood. A meticulous analysis of the performance ensued as the team prepared for the awards dinner, an elegant event which rounded off a great trip full of camaraderie and good spirit.
Partner and Team Captain, Shilen Manek, said:
“On behalf of TEAM SG, I would like to once again thank Megan, Beth and all at MacMillan for arranging, managing and hosting this trip to Portugal. It was wonderful to get a second opportunity to take part in this event and we all truly had a great time. We don’t know yet when we will do a re-run of the longest day challenge but when that does happen, we will do our best to raise as much or more if we possibly can.
I would also like to thank our clients, colleagues, contacts, family members and friends who kindly donated and championed our mission. We couldn’t have done it without you!”
